1) There is no FTL travel.
2) There are no 'Earth-type' worlds out there, and certainly not the endless supply of them that traditional SF portrays.
3) The concept o an artificial environment, being sustained over endless time, and across huge distances, is false. Coloniser ships, terra forming (which needs artificial maintenance after it is complete), environment domes and the rest, will inevitably fail. The only way to colonise a new world for real and for ever is to adapt man to those new environments, not the other way around.
There are certain 'background facts' that flow from these principals.
1) The galaxy is lightly dusted with alien colonies and coloniser ships - all failed and so derelicts or ruins.
2) Due to the size and scale of space and the lack of FTL humanity will not encounter extant intelligent life 'out there'.
3) Of the two trends in the modern world (broadly tech vs genetics) for the 'human animal' genetics are the long term future.
4) Tech vs genetics will be THE dividing line in society and ultimately the major source of conflict.
